What Is Cervical Cancer?

Cervical cancer develops in the cells of the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. Most cases are associated with a persistent infection caused by certain high-risk types of Human Papillomavirus (HPV).

HPV infection is common, but only a small proportion of persistent infections progress to cervical cancer. Regular screening and early detection are important for identifying precancerous changes before they develop into cancer.

Early-stage cervical cancer may not cause noticeable symptoms. Pap smear tests and HPV testing can help identify abnormal changes. In selected patients, early treatment may include fertility-preserving procedures.

For more advanced disease, surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy or targeted treatment may be recommended based on the diagnosis and overall health of the patient.
